What's In a Name? Well, A Lot...
"Sulam Yaakov" means Jacob's Ladder. In the story of Jacob's ladder, Jacob dreams of a ladder stretching from the earth to the heavens. In his dream, God identifies himself to Jacob, and reminds him of his promise to preserve his descendants and the people of Israel. Upon awakening, Jacob feels the presence of God in his daily life: "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it."
The ladder joins the divine and earthly worlds, just as the union of prayer, study, and community makes our group unique. The metaphor of the "ladder" evokes our aspirations to keep climbing, growing, and evolving as a Jewish community.
Our logo has our name in letters similar to that you'd find in the Torah, because we consider study and learning to be central to our values.
