Welcome to Minyan Sulam Yaakov (formerly The Gershman Y Congregation), an independent, egalitarian, traditional, lay-led minyan.
We meet at the Gershman Y, S. Broad and Pine Sts, in Center City Philadelphia.
MSY meets Shabbat mornings from September through mid-June. Services start at 9:30 AM and usually end around 12:30 PM and are followed by Kiddush. We are completely lay-led, with no "official" clergy, which means that our members do everything, including leading a discussion about the week’s Torah, haftarah or liturgical readings, instead of a sermon.
Exceptions to our schedule occur when the University of the Arts, which owns the Gershman Y, closes the building. Typical closure dates include Thanksgiving weekend and the weekends related to the end of (secular) year federal holidays. When in doubt, please check this website or call our information phoneline as closures can be announced by the University with as little as a week’s notice.
MSY does not meet at the Gershman Y from mid-June until after Labor Day.
MSY endeavors to accommodate all who wish to attend our services. The Gershman Y does have a ramp and elevator for those who require it, located on the Pine St. side of the building. This accommodation is provided by the University of the Arts at its discretion and is not within the control of MSY.
